Training

GM ARB Training LTD offer short courses in NPTC and Lantra based chainsaw and tree climbing operations. Courses are designed to cater for people interested in an introduction into arboriculture and for people wishing to further their skills.

With or without previous experience, GM ARB Training LTD courses are structured to meet any or all needs.

Location and recommendations

It is recommended that students come equipped with all appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and tools for any of the given courses. If you are unsure of the materials you need, please contact us by e-mail or by phone.

Courses are held at workshops set in vast acres of mixed woodland, at Godinton House, Ashford, Kent.
Precise directions will be given prior to the courses.

Course descriptions

These costs include:

All course dates are subject to demand. The following costs are based on 4 persons, so prices may vary.

CS30 - Maintain a chainsaw

Identify key parts for replacement and demonstrate basic techniques used for crosscutting timber under moderate strain. Understand and implement risk assessment in the workplace.

CS31 - Felling small trees

Felling trees up to 15" or 380mm diameter, dealing with hung-up trees, sneeding or branch removal techniques and crosscutting fallen stems. This course also looks at site safety and the legal / environmental factors. Candidates hoping to enrol for this course must already hold NPTC CS30.

Duration: 4 days plus 1 day assessment

CS32 - Felling medium size trees

Felling trees up to 30" or 780mm in diameter. This course covers everything that CS31 covers but on a larger scale, plus candidates will learn how to use a winch safely, to assist in the felling operation. Candidates must already hold NPTC CS30 and CS31.

CS38 - Climb trees and perform aerial rescue.

Training in aerial rescueThis course looks at basic climbing techniques and friction systems, access into and around the crown of a tree and how to perform and assist in aerial rescues. Basic First Aid procedures. This course has no entry requirements other than good dexterity and general fitness.

CS39 - Using a chainsaw from a rope and harness

Looking at the different techniques available and recommended for the safe removal of limbs with a chainsaw. You need to hold already NPTC CS30, CS31 and CS38.

CS40 - Carry out pruning operations

Depending on species, care must be taken toward the appropriate amount of crown that can be removed from a tree at any one time. Pruning techniques and thinning operations, as well as when trees should be pruned will be discussed throughout the course. Candidates must hold NPTC CS30, CS31, CS38 and CS39.

CS41 - Arboricultural dismantling operations

Undertake sectional fellingItís definitely worth having some experience with a chainsaw in a tree for this one. Using lowering blocks and ropes to dismantle trees or sections of them. Understand the dynamics involved with removing large sections of wood. Learn how to assist on the ground with the use of friction / lowering devices. This is a good course for people to take their skills to the next level. You will need NPTC CS30, CS31, CS38, CS39 and CS40.

CS45 - Arboricultural ground worker

You need to have already achieved NPTC CS30 and CS31 for this. Learn how to set up effective communication with a climber, organise a site assist on the lowering of pieces of crown, using basic lowering techniques. This course, as well as some of the others, can be run at your own site. Please ask for more details.

Duration: 1 day plus 1 day assessment

Perhaps there isnít a course that suits your needs. Maybe youíre interested in using your chainsaw at home or on your own land, or simply fancy having a go at tree climbing, purely for fun.
